I use an integrated group of small business apps for my businesses, Writing It Right For You and Detroit Ink Publishing. GoDaddy Online Bookkeeping is one of them; this app was formerly Outright Accounting and is targeted to freelancers, solo practitioners, and sellers at sites such as eBay and Etsy.

GoDaddy bought the independent Outright Accounting app in July 2012, and in September 2013, the app was renamed GoDaddy Online Bookkeeping. Many people weren’t comfortable with the GoDaddy branding and unsubscribed to the app.

GoDaddy has been my hosting company for several years, and I haven’t had any major problems, so the switch didn’t bother me. GoDaddy Online Bookkeeping is a cloud-based basic accounting, invoicing, and tax application. It is not meant to be a replacement for a full-featured dual-entry accounting program, but at less than $10/month, it meets the needs of many very small business owners.

No more saving receipts to track sales and expenses, no more spreadsheet data entry, and no more tax preparation headaches. GoDaddy Online Bookkeeping keeps your sales, expenses, and tax data stored online instead of your computer; eliminating worry about losing data should your computer crash.

The easy to understand-nothing to download application uses an email and password only requirement to organize, track, and report all your business finances so you can focus on what you do well to propel your business. By connecting all your business accounts to GoDaddy Online Bookkeeping, the application extracts sales and expense data and imports new transactions nightly so when your day is started, you’ll see the most current profit and loss activity on charts and graphs that make sense to you.

Perhaps the biggest advantage of using GoDaddy Online Bookkeeping, and one of my favorite features is how it auto-prepares forms for tax filing and alerts you to tax deadlines. It’ll categorize data from your accounts and automatically complete the Schedule C Worksheet for Form 1044 so you can print and give to your accountant. GoDaddy Online Bookkeeping tracks sales and tax data and calculates the amount of taxes owed to your state government.

And for e-commerce sellers, GoDaddy Online Bookkeeping helps interpret the new Form 1099-K, Payment Card and Third Party Network Transactions. As an editor, publisher, and marketing consultant who successfully manages three companies with apps, I often review and recommend apps for my clients. I work with many graduate and post-graduate students from all over the world, so I use MS Word a lot because of its high level editing features.

On March 27, 2014, Microsoft finally made all four of its full-featured Office Suite apps for the Apple iPad platform: OneNote, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The apps are now available separately in the Apple iOS App Store.

If you are someone who works with enterprise companies with IT departments that must control security and reliability for all PC-based software applications, but you also love working on your iPad, this new capability may be a godsend for you.

However, if you are a creative professional who primarily works in the Mac World with Apple software, the iWorks Suite may be all you need, even if you also work with Office documents. Apple has updated and improved the iWorks apps immensely; they now really integrate well with the Microsoft Office Suite, and all iWorks Office apps (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote) are completely free.


The MS Office apps for iPad are free, but only for viewing. (OneNote is now totally free for all platforms and devices.) If you want to create new documents, or edit existing documents, you have to have an Office365 subscription, the price of which starts at $6.99/month for the personal subscription, $9.99 for the Home Subscription, and some options for business subscriptions. Each subscription includes OneDrive, the cloud storage solution for Microsoft. All iWorks Office Apps are now free for all of your Macs and iDevices, and you receive 5GB of iCloud storage for free. You can get up to 100 GB of iCloud storage for $100/year.


The new Microsoft Office apps for iPad download and activate quickly and easily, especially after you have signed up for Office365. However, to access previously generated documents, they must be stored in Microsoft’s CloudDrive. You cannot access documents from Google Drive, Dropbox., or any other cloud storage service as you can with iWorks. I also found that the apps took up a lot of my precious iPad storage space.

Ease of Use

Some reviewers have mentioned that the new Microsoft Office Apps for iPad are not just stripped down desktop versions or slightly upgraded iPhone versions. These apps are neither; they are full-featured mobile applications specifically coded to take advantage of the iPad and its swipe features, etc., while still retaining most of the “Ribbon” functionality of the desktop apps.

Final Thoughts 

I work almost exclusively with freelancers, solo practitioners (mostly creatives– writers, musicians, designers, artists, etc., and VSB owners (Very Small Businesses), and my recommendations for them would be to stick with Macs and the iWorks Office Suite if at all possible. Pages, Numbers, and Keynote will work great and allow document storage in iCloud, Dropbox, or Google Drive or any combination thereof. There is really no need for the Office Apps for the iPad and Skydrive.

But if you are settled on the PC platform and use MS Office exclusively, then I would recommend that you look into Microsoft Office Apps for the iPad and get an Office365 subscription. For your situation, I think Microsoft finally got this right, but it is not an iWorks killer by any means.
